THE TE AMO BABY TEE
THE TE AMO BABY TEE
Ray Abeyta was one of the first people I met when I moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn. He left his number on my shovelhead telling me I needed to get it off the street before it got jacked. When I finally got around to calling, he immediately invited me to come over for a beer and told me to bring my bike. We shot the shit at Works on 14th and Wythe (where he also lived) and I was welcomed into the fold and given a storage spot like he'd known me his whole life. We did this often (usually at 2am with a half sniffed bag) and I learned a lot about the kind of man I wanted to be through Ray's endless stories and wisdom from an adventurous and wild life. He embraced all of it in the same way, with a giant smile and sparkle in his eyes - ready to experience as much as he could grasp at once. He invited me to take a ride with a few friends on an unseasonably warm November night the Sunday after thanksgiving, but by the time I got off work he'd already left. I can't help but wish I held him up a few extra minutes to wait, but that's just how it goes when you lose someone who made such a profound impact. He was the bright sun I needed at that time and I'm glad I had the chance to stand in his light for a while--we all are! Te Amo, Baby! Ride in power, Hermano! I made this shirt from his signature skull and the works engineering logo because my original Works shirt is falling apart at the seams and full of holes and stains, because the building is gone, and my friend still shines that same light in my heart. Without hope and without fear por vida!
